Yomitan Kiln Cooperative

Area

Yomitan Kiln Cooperative

There is a pottery Mecca called Yachimun no sato in Zakimi, Yomitan Village, located in the central region of mainland Okinawa, where many craftsmen own and manage their pottery workshops (Yachimun means pottery in the Okinawan dialect). Yomitan is well known for pottery, and there are three climbing kilns in the village. At the center is the red-roofed Yuntanza shared kiln, farther up is the Kita kiln used by young craftsmen, and the Kinjo kiln of Yomitan Tsuboya-style pottery, used by living national treasure Jiro Kinjo and his clan. The works of these craftsmen can also be purchased at their workshops and other retail outlets. Observers are allowed at some workshops, but please do not disturb the workers.
