Also called the phantom island, the Yabiji shoal lies north of Ikema Island. Some 12 kilometers north-south and 8 east-west, it is Japan’s biggest coral colony. Composed of more than 100 large and small reefs, it is above water several times during the year at low tide. Divers love it and it is also a popular tourist spot. On March 3 on the lunar calendar, when the tide is at its lowest, the colony is one meter above water. Crowds flock to visit during the Yabiji Matsuri.
