There are two natural springs near the coast at Hyakuna, Nanjo city. The western one is known literally as “received water,” and the eastern one as “running water.” On the western “receiving water” side is a rice field known as Mifuda. This is regarded as the place from which rice was introduced into the Ryukyu Islands. The legendary God of Ryukyu, Amamikyo, is supposed to have planted three grains of rice here, at the so-called Ukinju Hainju site. On the first day of the ox in January of the old lunar calendar, the people of Nakandakari, Tamagusuku Village perform a ceremony designated an intangible cultural asset. It was one of the most important places of worship east of Shurijo Castle.
