It takes about 10 minutes from Ishigaki Island to Taketomi Island by high-speed ferry, and the charge is 1,100yen. Both Anei Kanko, Yaeyama Kanko Ferry run fast boats from Ishigaki to the dock on the east side of Taketomi every 30 minutes from 7:30AM to 5:30PM daily. You can make a one-day trip from Ishigaki Island, so this makes it a convenient and popular place to visit. Taketomi is 6 kilometers southwest of Ishigaki Island. It is a flat island, 9 kilometers in circumference. It’s village is a beautiful community, with rows of red tile-roofed houses surrounded by garden walls of piled coral stone fronting roadways covered with white sand. The whole town is a National Traditional Architecture Preservation District.
The seed harvest “Tanatui” festival is held during September or October on the lunar calendar for nine days. This festival is a National Important Cultural Asset. People from Taketomi living off the island come home for the festival, temporarily doubling or tripling the normal population.
