Kudaka Island

Kudaka Island

Area

Kudaka is a small island with a circumference of About 8kilometers, located about 5 kilometers from Chinen Peninsula. When Amamikiyo, the creator of the Ryukyus, descended from heaven, Kudaka was the first island she made. Kudaka is called the “island of the gods” and the land where the five grains originated. Historically, a pilgrimage to Kudaka Island was obligatory for Ryukyu kings. A Festival called Saiho, held every twelve years in the year of the horse, survives here unchanged from the distant past. Because this festival is representative of the islands ancient mystical rituals, Kudaka is a very important island in the folk customs of Okinawa.
