Enkakuji and Hojo Bridge

Area

Hojo Bridge crosses Hojo Pond on the grounds of Enkakuji Temple. It is built on four flagstones of Ryukyu limestone. A dolerite (a sparkling green stone) for the balustrades was brought from China. On top of each sides four newels stand stone-sculpted lion statues, which are said to be masterpieces of Okinawa sculpture art. Partially destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa, it was restored in 1957.
