Bettelheim Monument

British missionary and Doctor Bettelheim visited the Ryukyus in 1846 and stayed at the Gokoku Temple in Naminoue, Naha City with his family during his missionary to Japan. He served as an English teacher, published the Ryukyuan language version of the Bible — “Ryukyuan Translated Bible” — and gave instructions for the smallpox vaccination, and taught western medicine to Doctor Kijin Nakachi of Tomari during his 8-year stay. The monument is located in the ruins of his residence in the premises of the Gokokuji Temple.
