2014: Sakura Matsuri -Japan’s earliest Cherry Blossom Festival-

cherry blossom

Bright pink cherry blossoms which bring the feeling of spring in Okinawa will begin to bloom on January. Flowering starts gradually from northern part of Okinawa Island, and Cherry Blossom Festival will be held in various locations. A lot of people visit these locations, and each location will be crowded with people who are just waiting for this moment. Speaking of cherry blossoms in Okinawa, Hikanzakura (Taiwan cherry) is more popular than Someiyoshino (Yoshino cherry). The characteristic of Hikanzakura is that its deep pink colored flower features tropical atmosphere and it blooms downward. Hikanzakura hardly falls, it withstands wind and rain, keeps blooming from about half a month to one month, and then flower drops off. Cherry blossom front in Okinawa moves down from north to south, and then remote islands. Basically both warm temperature and sufficient cold are necessary for cherry blossom to bloom. However, due to lack of coldness, it waits to bloom until cold wave moves toward south. That is why it blooms from north to south in Okinawa. Let’s go on “ohanami” (cherry viewing picnic) in Okinawa where you can feel a little of early spring!

Cherry Blossom Viewing Spot
Ordinary style of hanami in Okinawa is taking a walk. You can hardly see people having a picnic or party under the trees. Strolling around the spot and enjoy seeing cherry blossoms is the Okinawan style. Cherry blossom festivals will be held from Mid-January to Mid-February on various locations. Please check the details on events and visit right away!
